Dell gets nailed by class action suit

February 25, 2005 smithatlanta Leave a comment

Engadget published this article about Dell getting hit with a class action lawsuit. I’m really surprised it didn’t happen any sooner. Since I have been averaging a new hard drive a year with there laptops, I would have to agree with some of the statements made.

Does technology really help in schools

February 25, 2005 smithatlanta Leave a comment

Melanie and I have been having a discussion about the value of technology in schools and I’m slowly starting to take her viewpoint of not using technology in the class room. Her view is that using technology is a crutch and distracts from the essence of learning. Since my career is technology(I’m a software developer) oriented, I first thought that having kids use technology in the classroom would help give them an advantage down the road. But after sleeping on this for a couple of nights I think my wife is correct. I think that technology in the class would probably be just another distraction in a world already full of distractions. I remember when I was 15 years old. I had enough distractions with the opposite sex. :)

The whole topic came up after one of the school districs in the Atlanta area wanted to give high school kids laptops. I really think it would be a waste of money as well as create another distraction from learning. I think the money would be better spent on teachers salaries. Since Melanie is a teacher I know first hand how little they make. At the school she works at many of the teachers are leaving because the pay is so much better in almost any industry. I’m afraid our schools might become a haven for teachers that do just enough work to get by(which includes passing kids just to avoid dealing with obnoxious parents)

Slashdot has this article about a possible acquisition of Tivo by Apple. Can you say iMovie…… :( I’m sick of the letter “I” in front of every new apple product.

A little info on why Stern is leaving the free air waves if you didn’t already know

February 24, 2005 smithatlanta Leave a comment

This is an article about Howard Stern and some of the reasoning behind him making the move to satellite next year. I think we’ll see more and more of the interesting radio personalities move from the free radio air waves to either satellite or maybe a podcast like environment.

Bluetooth streaming from your cassette deck?

February 23, 2005 smithatlanta Leave a comment

This is a cassette that you put into the cassette deck in your stereo and stream audio from your bluetooth enabled mp3 player thru your car stereo. This is an interesting idea but how many cars do you see with a cassette deck these days. I would really prefer to have auto makers put RCA jacks on the front of their head units so I could plug in my mp3 player that way. Bluetooth and wifi are cool but it’s hard to beat the bandwidth and clarity of a hard wired connection.

Report on the new Motorola MPX phone

February 23, 2005 smithatlanta Leave a comment

This is a report on the new Motorola MPX phone. This is the phone that flips open one way like a typical Motorola clam shell phone and then you can flip it the other way and it looks like a blackberry. From the picture in the article, it looks like the keyboard is a little too small. I guess we’ll see once they get to the retail stores.
